Feel Good Rhythms from the Congo!

Kasai Masai at The Welfare Ystradgynlais, Swansea

Break up the autumnal gloom and take a long-haul trip to the smoking hot rhythms and sunny beats of the Congo this October with Kasaï Masaï; a firm feel-good favourite and a welcome addition to the line-up at the Welfare.

Kasaï Masaï bring the traditional sound of remote equatorial African villages to the UK, adding a unique and contemporary twist on the way.

Kasaï is a region of Congo that is named after a river in the heart of the rainforest where many tribes maintain their traditional lifestyles. The Masaï are a dignified tribe whose lives still centre around a nomadic existence.

Playing ancestral music which has been passed on from generation to generation, their sound is rooted in the healing power of the driving percussion and singing combined with the majestic Congolese guitar and jazz saxophone. Written in Swahili, Lingala and Kimongo, the lyrics reflect the cultural diversity of a region where more than four hundred languages are spoken.

”Kasai Masai successfully marry a respect for vintage grooves with an overwhelming urge to move the dance floor this is the sound of the old and new, of the countryside and the city, from deep in the heart of Africa…” Nige Tassell, WOMAD

Kasaï Masaï give an incredible live show, packed with crowd pleasers and absorbing African rhythms. First class exponents of the soukous style of music, Kasaï Masaï aren’t known for doing things by halves.

Based in London, and led by Voodoo King, Nickens Nkoso, Kasaï Masaï mix the traditional sound of the equatorial African village with a distinctive urban edge. The band’s fast-paced style of soukous and rumba meld with Congolese folkloric traditions to create an infectious form of dance music. Nickens has previously collaborated with artists such as Koffi Olomide, Papa Wemba, Kanda Bongo Man, Mose Fan Fan, Samba Mapangala and many more.

From the plains to the soaring heights, this is a sound that will transport you to a land where music is more than just entertainment; they will take you to a place where it is a way of life.
